Getting to the Heart of Religion
Mark 7:1-23
May 18, 2014

Introduction

I. Why won’t the disciples wash their hands? Mark 7:1-5

II. The Pharisees are guilty of just going through the motions. Mark 7:6

III. The Pharisees wrongly require obedience to tradition in addition to the law of God. Mark 7:7-12

IV. The true origin of moral defilement. Mark 7:14-23

Questions for Reflection:
• What does Jesus say are the problems with the religious practice of the Scribes and Pharisees?
• What is the danger of external religion or of ‘just going through the motions’?
• Why is it important to distinguish between religious traditions and the law of God?
• If the heart is the true origin of moral defilement, what is the solution? What are the best ways to seek to bring change to our hearts and the hearts of others?
