Introduction:

I. The conspiracies to destroy Jesus:

     A. The plot by the religious authorities. Mark 14:1–2

     B. The plot by Judas. Mark 14:10–11

II. A woman’s extravagant act of devotion. Mark 14:3–9

     A. An extremely costly gift. Mark 14:3–5

     B. But what about the poor? Mark 14:5, 7

     C. Her action serves to prepare Jesus’ body for burial. Mark 14:8

     D. This woman serves as a model of the high calling to follow Jesus. Mark 14:6, 9

Questions for Reflection:

  • What does this passage teach us about Jesus?
  • In what ways would this woman’s act be extremely costly for her, requiring courage and faith?
  • Can you think of other examples of Christians who have shown similar kinds of costly sacrifices for the sake of Christ?
  • What are ways we might follow her example in our own lives?
