The Last Supper
Mark 14:12–25
October 4, 2015

Introduction:

I. Plans for the supper. Mark 14:12–17

II. Betrayal and the sovereignty of God. Mark 14:18–21; Genesis 50:20

III. Jesus institutes the last supper. Mark 14:22–25; 1 Corinthians 11:23–27

     A. The elements are a memorial of Christ’s atoning sacrifice.

     B. In the supper, we ‘feed’ on the real presence of Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:16

     C. It is a sign and seal of the new covenant. Mark 14:24

     D. It is a foretaste of the great wedding banquet in the world to come. Mark 14:25

Questions for Reflection:

  • What comfort is derived from knowing that the betrayal and suffering of Jesus are ultimately
  • in accord with God’s sovereign will?
  • If God is ultimately sovereign over these events, is Judas no longer responsible for his acts?
  • Why not?
  • What is the meaning of the Lord’s Supper? Why do we consider the Lord’s Supper
  • to be a ‘sacrament’?
  • How should we prepare ourselves for the Lord’s Supper?
