July 17, 2016

Introduction:

I. “Therefore…” Colossians 3:5a

II. We are called to be different in the area of purity. Colossians 3:5

III. Called to be holy because God hates sin. Colossians 3:6–7

IV. We are called to be different in our use of the tongue. Colossians 3:8–9

V. A key strategy for change: the “Put off / Put on” principle. Colossians 3:9b–10

VI. A new humanity defined by the Supremacy of Jesus. Colossians 3:11

Questions for reflection:

  • How does Paul’s teaching in Colossians 3:5–11 differ from mere moralism (that is,
  • just urging people to stop doing bad things)?
  • What habits and practices do you need to put to death?
  • How do we rely on God’s strength and power for change?
  • Paul assumes that we are living in fellowship with one another. What is the role of the community of believers in helping you to live the way Christ wants you to live?
