I. The command: slaves obey your masters. Colossians 3:22

II. Does the Bible allow for slavery? It’s complicated.
     A. Yes. Colossians 3:22; Ephesians 6:5–8; 1 Peter 2:18

     B. But the Bible sows the seeds of its coming to an end.

          1. Not just property. Made in the image of God. Genesis 1:26

          2. Slave and free are one in Christ. Galatians 3:28

          3. Both a man and brother. Philemon 1:16

          4. Ultimately, slavery inconsistent with our freedom in Christ. 1 Corinthians 7:20–21

          5. The historical evidence.

III. Principles for employees.
     A. Don’t just labor for “eye-service.” Colossians 3:22

     B. Work as if Jesus is your boss (because He is). Colossians 3:23–24

     C. Negatively, God will penalize the wrong-doer. Colossians 3:25

IV. A word to employers and bosses. Colossians 4:1

Questions for reflection:

  • What biblical principles guide a Christian employee’s relationship to a difficult boss?
  • How might your attitude at work be different if you thought of yourself as working for Jesus?
