Topic: Advent Scripture: John 1:1–1:3

The Divine Word

John 1:1-3

December 1, 2017

I.   In the beginning was the Word (Logos). John 1:1-2

     A. The Word is the communication that reveals who God is.

     B. The Word is closely identified with the God of creation. John 1:1-3; Genesis 1:1

     C. The Word (Logos) was a key philisophical term among the Greeks.

II.  The Word is distinct from God. John 1:1

III. The Word is God. John 1:1

IV. Jesus reveals to us the truth about God. John 14:8-9.

 Questions for reflection:

  • How does John, in one sentence (John 1:1), trigger two key concepts prominent among the Jews and the Greeks?
  • What comfort is there in understanding that Jesus is God?
  • What are some of the characteristics of the Father that Jesus reveals to us?
