Thinking Biblically About Race and Identity
Genesis 1:26-28
September 27, 2020

Introduction:

I.    The Bible stresses our likeness and not our differences.
      A.  All alike aremade in the image of God. Genesis 1:26-28.

      B.  Everyone is part of the same race as a descendant of Adam and Eve.
           Genesis 3:20; Acts 17:26

      C.  Problems with 'race' as a category.

II.   Our highest identity marker is our identity in Christ. John 17:20-26;
       Colossians 3:9-11; 2 Corinthians 5:14-18

III.  Our future trajectory in glory is inclusive of all ethnicities. Revelation 5:9-10.

IV.  The church is to be a place where all ethnicities are reconciled and united.
      Ephesians 2:14-17, 3:6, 4:1-6.

Questions for reflection:

  • How is our common origin in Adam and Eve and an understanding of the Image of God a helpful place to begin a discussion concerning race?

  • Do you feel superior or struggle with animosity towards another ethnic group?
    If so, what is the first step, as with all sin, in response?
