Stocking-stuffer ideas for families
Finding discipleship materials for children and parents is one of the “funnest” parts of my job. And I have a short but sweeeeet line-up of stocking stuffers for you to consider this Christmas. You can find some of these on the family resource table (on top of the shelf, so as to be out of reach of children for now). Please take a look to see how you like the items, but leave them behind for others to examine. Until after Christmas, these are just samples for you to peruse; they will be available for check-out or for nursery use at the first of the new year.
For young readers
I AM: 40 Reasons to Trust God
“Those who know your name put their trust in you.” (Psalm 9:10) Through Bible stories, short devotions, and prayers, children discover the meaning of 40 different names of God and how each one relates to their lives. As they develop understanding of God’s character and his love for them, they can grow to know, love, and trust, the great I AM. Hard cover with nice pages and what I call “realist animation style” illustrations and--a feature I always appreciate—an attached satin ribbon bookmark.
The Promises of God Storybook Bible
This is my favorite! There are many good books and devotionals out right now that look at the redemptive story of Scripture as a whole; you probably own at least one. In this work, author Jennifer Lyell presents this message through the format of God’s character revealed in the promises of the different sections and stories that make up the narrative whole of the Bible. Each chapter title contains the word “promise”, such as “A Crushing Promise: God will destroy the snake who lied to Adam and Eve” and “Promise for the Nations: God will save a people from every tribe, language, and nation.” Just reading the table of contents thrills my soul! Hard cover with pages of a nice weight, colorful illustrations, and that useful attached bookmark.
Baby Believers series
Not your typical educational baby board books, these little gems written by Danielle Gitchen and illustrated by Jessica Blanchard teach concepts such as opposites, and body movements through scripture. Example: Wet and Dry; “For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.” These are definitely going to be a new year addition to the church nursery shelf!
For Parents and the whole family
A Better December
Here’s the description that sold me and truly explains the beauty of this delightfully moving little book.
“In a uniquely original style, Steve seamlessly merges poetry, narration, and Scripture, with strikingly creative phrasing. A master of prose, poetry, and the Bible, Steve has written a little book that bends and blends genres. A Better December is a winning combo of insightful content about how to ‘do life’… and innovative style. We enjoyed this little book so much that when we finished it, we immediately reread it—for its profound biblical tracing from Solomon to Someone, for its emphatic message about ‘unstuffing’ life, and for its fresh use of language and memorable style.” — Don and Judy Killgallon
These are not new, but if you don’t already own them, I highly recommend them.
Getty Kids Hymnal Family Hymn Sing
From Keith & Kristyn Getty birthed out of their own times of family worship, this project was recorded by the Getty’s band of top Irish & American musicians with children as the lead singers, and features classic hymns such as Be Thou My Vision, How Great Thou Art, and Jesus Paid It All. It is our prayer that this project will facility singing of deep theological truth in homes and build in our children biblical foundations that will last a lifetime!
Getty Kids Hymnal In Christ Alone
Engaging kids with songs to carry for life that share timeless truths with intentional artistry. 12 hymns old and new sung by kids for kids of all ages to sing along to! Recorded with kid friendly arrangements by the Getty Band.
Hank the Cowdog series
Not overtly Christian discipleship, but full of the joy of life, a true gift from Him who has richly given us all things to enjoy. Again, not new, but super-fun and full of ironic humor. These stories were meant to be heard even more than read alone. Read by the author, John Erickson, they will provide hours of enjoyment for your entire family. When my kids were younger, we would listen every time we got in the car, and then listen to each book over and over.
Well, I hope you find something on this list to bless your family. I was certainly blessed looking for them. Merry Christmas
