The Purpose of ECC, part 4: Serving the World
August 27, 2015
Below is the fourth part of a brief statement approved by the ECC Session to help further clarify what we mean by the ECC Purpose Statement. Our purpose statement reminds us that our primary God given calling is to be faithful followers of Jesus.
In this post, we define what we mean by the last phrase, Serving the World.
The Purpose of Evangelical Community Church
Following Jesus by Serving the World
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
Jesus, Matthew 28:19-20
“You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them… But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus, Mark 10:42-45
We are the People of God in Christ. Like Abraham, like Israel, we are tasked with blessing the world.
We are called to announce the good news: Jesus, descendant of David, dead and risen, is King! Salvation is through no other! Repent and believe. Your sins are forgiven! Our mission as followers of Jesus is to declare this gospel to all people so that the ends of the earth may behold the glory of God and sing His praises forever!
We are agents of God’s New Creation, of a Kingdom that has come but is not complete. We are called to see God’s will be done on earth as in heaven. Wherever we go, we proclaim with our lives that Jesus is King and we live by His rule. We seek justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry, comfort for the mourning, healing for the sick, shelter for the stranger, and help for the helpless. We bring light to dark places.
Because we follow our King, like Him we bear the pain of sin and death for a world that is hurting. We suffer because He suffered, we serve because He served.
