Update on ECC’s Staff Transitions

I want to provide an update on where ECC is with respect to the staff transition of Isaac and Christy Gould (who are now enjoying the balmy winter weather in Minnesota) to the present. Isaac’s call to Riverside Church has left us with two positions to fill, the Children’s Music Director and the Jr. and Sr. High Youth Director.

While the Session has final authority in these matters, it is the Administrative (Admin) Team that develops Job descriptions and performs the postings and interviews for these positions. In principle it was decided that with these staff openings, it is important to take the time to reevaluate the needs for ministry at ECC before making permanent decisions concerning new staffing. Hence it was decided to fill the positions through the school year on an interim basis. The interim Youth Director will also continue through the summer months.

The Admin Team was able to post the Children’s Music Director position very quickly and I am very happy to report that the position has been filled by the very capable Sarah Grogan. We are blessed to have Sarah on board. Sarah began leading the Joyful Noise group on Sunday evenings at the start of November.

Because the interim Youth Director will have reduced job responsibilities, it was decided to make this position part-time. Unlike Isaac, the interim will not be responsible for things like Boot Camp on Sunday mornings (this will be led by Elder John Gould), Young Adult leadership, preaching, assisting in worship, serving on the Christian Discipleship Committee, teaching adult Sunday school, and filling in for the pastor when he is away.

You may have noticed that we began by posting an interim Youth Director position for 10 hours a week but recently expanded the position to 20 hours per week. This is because we at first envisioned the interim position lasting only through May with the main objective of running our Sunday evening Jr. and Sr. high youth group fellowship meetings.

This was rethought during the most recent Admin team meeting. The Admin team realized that if we want to have our traditional summer youth programs, the planning for those programs has to begin in the winter and spring. Further, it also made sense that the person doing the planning should be the one to lead those summer programs. When the Admin team concluded that this position should include the summer ministry work as well, they also decided to increase the hours and this is reflected in the latest posting. We are working diligently to have this position filled on an interim basis soon.

As a church, we are committed to coming alongside our families to provide support for parents and age appropriate teaching, fellowship, and service opportunities for our youth. We remain committed to the biblical principle that parents are called to be the primary disciplers of their children. At the same time, we as a church are committed to partnering with our families with the goal of seeing our students become mature, godly adults.

In an update like this, it isn’t possible to address every question. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me, or any of the elders or members of the admin team. We may not be able to answer every question at this time, but we will do our best.

The Session and Admin team need and appreciate your prayers for wisdom and for God to raise up the best individuals possible to fill our staff needs.

Over the years, God has blessed this church with strong leaders and a great staff. I personally and looking forward to seeing what He has in store for us.

Jodee, our primary reason for creating an interim period is to allow for time to assess the staffing needs for ECC. Though it appears that we will not be aiming at an ordained Assoc. Pastor in the immediate future, the Session is giving consideration to how we can cover some of these pastoral responsibilities moving forward.

I'm just wondering why we are posting for an "interim" Youth Leader as opposed to a permanent one. Are we assuming that will be part of an Associate Pastor's position? Are we looking for a new associate pastor?

I would note that Bootcamp has a team of teachers and that Isaac had organized lessons and documents to take the class to the Summer break. Gaye Wagner is helping immensely with administrative support for homework, quizzes and etc. Not sure I deserve credit for anything other than being part f the team.
