What the Elders are Reading
Last weekend, right before the snow-apocalypse struck, the Session gathered on Friday night and Saturday for an annual retreat.
The topic of this year's retreat was the elders themselves. In preparation, everyone read through Church Elders: How to Shepherd God's People Like Jesus, by Jeramie Rinne.
This helpful book explores what it means to be an elder in the church. Here's a quick overview of the chapters:
- Don't Assume (that you are qualified!)
- Smell Like Sheep
- Serve Up the Word
- Track Down the Strays
- Lead without Lording
- Shepherd Together
- Model Maturity
- Plead for the Flock
At the Session retreat, we worked through each chapter, discussing how the elders of ECC can serve more faithfully and biblically in the church. And I have to say, you can be greatly encouraged by these elders on Session. Our elders are faithful men who love Jesus and love this congregation. Every one of the current elders are gifted men who desire only the best for ECC.
I would encourage you: pray for members of Session this year. Pray for your elders. Pray that God would be glorified through the labors of Pastor Rich and the nine elders on Session. If you want a visual reminder of these leaders, see our Session page on the website.
And if you want to learn more about what an elder is, and the role he plays in a church congregation, I encourage you to pick up the book the elders read and read it along with them!
